Robert Hoover, MD, MPH, FACP is Senior Vice President of Global Clinical Services at Sunrise Medical, one of the world's largest manufacturers of homecare and extended care products. In this role, Dr. Hoover utilizes his extensive experience, knowledge and relationships with medical professionals to help establish Sunrise as a true partner within the healthcare industry. Dr. Hoover coordinates clinical studies for Sunrise Medical products to assist clinicians with demonstrating to funding sources the efficacy of medical devices. In addition, Dr. Hoover leads the clinical education staff at Sunrise Medical.
Dr. Hoover spent 7 years at CIGNA as the Medicare Durable Medical Equipment Regional Carrier (DMERC) Medical Director for Region D. In that role, he was responsible for coverage, coding and claim review for durable medical equipment, orthotics and prosthetics for the Medicare program in 17 western states and 3 US territories. He also was the Medicare Part B medical director for the state of Tennessee in 2005. He served as a spokesman for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and was a member of several government advisory panels evaluating coverage of new technologies. Dr. Hoover was a member of CIGNA Healthcare’s Technology Advisory Committee that performed technology assessments and made coverage determinations for CIGNA’s commercial HMO and PPO operations.
A graduate of the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL, Dr. Hoover earned his medical degree from the same institution and completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He established an internal medicine practice in Nashville and served as a medical director with the State of Tennessee’s Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation prior to leaving clinical practice. He holds a Master’s of Public Health (MPH) from the Medical College of Wisconsin and is board-certified in internal medicine. He was recently elected as a Fellow in the American College of Physicians, the second largest physician group in the United States, with over 118,000 members.
